The optical cat (also known as ONU device) provided by our home installed operator accesses the operator’s network through PON (passive optical network), connects the optical splitter, and then connects to the PON port of the operator’s OLT device. The protocol data is completely different from the traditional LAN. Optical Cat converts PON data into Ethernet data, which plays the role of protocol conversion, i.e. gateway.
Light cat type: can be divided into EPON ONU, GPON ONU, XPON ONU according to the standard
1. EPON ONU: EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network), based on IEEE 802.3ah protocol standard, provides uplink and downlink symmetric rate of 1.25Gbps.
2. GPON ONU: GPON (Gigabit-Capable PON), based on ITU-T G.984. x protocol standard, provides uplink and downlink asymmetric rates of 1.244Gbps for uplink and 2.488Gbps for downlink.
3. XPON ONU: dual-mode ONU, supporting IEEE 802.3ah/ITU-T G.984. x protocol standard.
